Dr Les

$7.00
Sold Out

This listing is for 1 tuber shipped direct from our farm in April.

Pictures don’t do this one justice. You think nothing is coming and then - KAPOW! - there’s a large dinnerplate flower mocking all of your doubts! We don’t know who Dr Les is, but their flower is one of our new favorites! This variety was introduced in 1975, making it a vintage variety worth having in the garden. The plant is closer to the 3-3.5’ size, making it a good choice to put in front of taller varieties. Larger flowers means this one does need some good staking.

Bloom Size: 10-12”

Plant size: 3-4’

Fable’s Notes: It’s a later variety at about 120 days from planting to blooming, but the flower really is worth it. Much more satisfying in person. It does not make the best cut flower - it tends to wilt and drop petals within a day or two of being picked, but it’s certainly perfect for a showy garden!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

***Tubers start shipping out in mid April unless otherwise requested. If you request an earlier shipment of your order, you are strongly encouraged to add an insulation pack to their order to avoid risk of freezing in transit. We are not responsible for weather damage during transit. All orders are shipped via USPS.***

Sometimes crud happens, and while we only list a portion of each variety into our shop at a time to try to mitigate risk of running short on supply, there is a possibility of tubers not making it through the winter (like the one year mice managed to get into our storage containers in March!) If such a thing occurs, and we are unable to fulfill your order, you will be notified for the option of a refund or store credit as you see fit. This year, we have a dedicated refrigeration unit to keep our tubers safe and at the perfect temp and humidity, so we’re hopeful all our stock will pull through without a hitch.

When Is the Online Shop Open?

February 2nd each year. We decided against opening the shop after harvest like more and more farms seem to be doing. Not only do we need the winter to upload all the new varieties (each listing takes a bit of time and only one of us mans the website.) Moreover, to guarantee the highest quality dahlias, we prefer to wait until spring to offer our tubers. This allows us to assess their health and viability after winter storage, ensuring you receive only the best.

When do you ship? How much does it cost?

Typically, we ship starting April 15th. We are in southwestern New Hampshire (zone 5b-6a) so though it’s unlikely, it’s not impossible for a snow storm to hit us this late in the season. In that event, we will ship once the weather permits. Orders for local pick up are from April 15th until May 15 as you indicate, and will be left for you on our front porch on the appointed day. (We do not give tours of our home or farm at this time.) We’re still getting used to the clunky shipping settings on Squarespace. Most orders generally start at $5.50 for one tuber with 50 cents additional added on. This depends on location, however. You can always put the tubers in your cart and then ‘check out’ to see what the cost is without purchasing! Sorry - we do not offer international shipping at this time.

I don’t see an eye on my tuber right out of the shipping box - will it still grow??

When we harvest our dahlia tubers, they are washed, divided and then washed again - all by hand. This gives us the up close and personal touch - we identify at least one eye per tuber before storing each one. If a tuber doesn’t have an obvious eye, we don’t save it. So rest assured, your tuber does have an eye! Where did it go? Many times, eyes shrink in cold storage - they sometimes look like little pin-pricks in the husk of the tuber by the time winter is over. Once you plant this tuber, that eye will reemerge over the next couple of weeks, and they grow just as fast as tubers with larger eyes.

Do you accept returns?

We do not assume responsibility for tubers once they are in your care. We are a micro-farm that personally handles every tuber we sell at least 5 times between harvest and shipping. As such, we know our tubers are healthy and viable with eyes. However, we are here to answer any questions you may have and welcome any concerns. In the rare case of a shipping damage, please contact us within 24 hours of receiving your package with a photo of the damage and the shipping box and we’ll make it right.

Is your farm open to the public for visiting?

Sadly, not at this time. Our flower beds are near a derelict barn and an old, drained manmade pond, and it’s not safe for visitors as a result (our insurance would not like that, either.) However, we have long-term plans to purchase separate farm land where the public will be welcome to come hang out with the flowers! Every time you purchase tubers from us, you’re helping us get closer to that dream!

Do you Sell Cut Flowers?

Being a microfarm, we only have between 1-4 plants of each variety we offer plus a few we do not offer in the shop. As a result, we cannot supply dozens or hundreds of the same flower at a time like many grocers and florists prefer. However, though we may not have many of the same flower, we still produce a few thousand varied blooms a year! If you are interested in purchasing flowers from us, let’s chat!
